At the start of a new year many people make resolutions. Some people want to lose weight and get fit, others want to read more. Last year my resolution was to floss every day, which I am proud to say that I flossed 364 out of 366 days in 2020. Whatever, your goals for the coming year, I would like to encourage everyone to become a little more environmentally focused in 2021!
- Make small changes to reduce your waste.
- Use clothes instead of paper towels. Use reusable snack bags instead of plastic baggies. Find recyclable alternatives for everyday objects like toothbrushes, deodorant, etc. Start composting. Shop secondhand or join a Buy Nothing group!
- Go outside.
- Explore trails in your town (check out Joshua’s Trust trails to get started!) While you’re out on the trail really look around, listen to what you hear, and just take in the peace and quiet. The Seek app is great if you want to learn about the plants you are seeing.
- Support organizations that are committed to combat climate change.
- Your local land trust is of course a wonderful place to start but there are lots of organizations that work in other ways to combat the powerful effects of climate change! Joshua’s Trust does our part by protecting land forever!
- Plant a garden (even if it’s just a pot in your kitchen window).
- Growing your own food or even just herbs is a great way to connect to nature and makes you more mindful about what you eat!
- Shop locally.
- We are fortunate to live in an area with fantastic access to farmer’s markets, farms and incredible small businesses. Shopping locally reduces carbon emissions in transportation and supports your local community!
