Vesper Flights by Helen Macdonald

Hello JT Friends and Critters! It’s been some time since our last book review I hope everyone has been getting outside as much as I have! I’ll confess, the long days of summer usually leave me feeling less apt to have my nose in a book and more likely to be found out in my garden. However, one book has served as a great companion for the few moments when it’s just too hot (or too wet, of late) to be outside. In this l review, we present Vesper Flights, by Helen Macdonald.

Many of you may recognize the author Helen Macdonald as the New York Times Bestselling Author of H is for Hawk. In this newest collection of short narratives, Macdonald weaves together themes of climate change and our intimate relationship, or lack there-of, with an ever-changing world.

Though I prefaced this review as the perfect book for those of us short on time, it was not with the intent to mislead you into thinking this is a light read. The content of these short stories encourage an intense level of reflection – it would be challenging to read this collection and not find yourself emotionally impacted. But it is the mark of a good book for the reader to be left changed by the end. In fact, it is the apex of this collection, the chapter from which the book draws its title, that challenges us to go beyond our routines to view the world on a grander scale. Vesper Flights, is the perfect summer read for those of us with a deficit of time but who are driven to be catalysts for change!

We at Joshua’s Trust are so grateful to each and every one of our members and friends; you serve as ambassadors for change in the community we love!
