The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
Hello again, JT Friends and Critters! It has been a while since our last book review and, if I’m honest, it’s because I wasn’t quite sure which direction to take you in next. How fitting it was then, when I stumbled upon a novel conveniently named after the currents that push and pull us to exactly where we need to be. In this blog post, we review The Four Winds, by Kristin Hannah.
This novel caught my eye for a reason that will be entirely unsurprising to those who know me well – the cover art is an array of beautiful, golden wheat. My love affair with wheat blossomed when I recognized the ingenuity one small seed sparked over ten thousand years ago. However, In The Four Winds, wheat represents hope for a brighter future and provides a foundation for brave acts, when all that surrounds us is fear. Follow the story of a family in despair as the land they love turns against them amidst The Dust Bowl and Great Depression. Though the novel is a work of fiction, the characters could easily be any one of our parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles whose resilience has earned them the honor of membership in The Greatest Generation. This novel will humble you at your core as you glimpse only a fraction of the hardships faced by millions, not that many years ago. You will be reminded that there is always hope for a brighter future, we just have to Be Brave.
My love of wheat has brought so much joy into my life, including the joy of reading this novel. If you have a special plant that you connect with and has brought you joy we would love to hear about it! Please send all stories to administration@joshuastrust.org
