Through a Child’s Eyes

My son is getting fussy again and I know just the thing that will turn his mood around, taking a trip outside. When we go outside, he stares with wonder at the trees as they sway in the breeze. He excitedly exclaims, “ah!” when he sees a flower or plant that he likes and wants to touch. He crinkles the leaves in his hands (and attempts to eat them…). He plays with the pumpkin on the porch, rocking it back and forth. He squeals as the neighbors and their dog walk by. He hears an airplane in the sky and immediately turns his head upward to find it. He uses his little fingers to dig in the dirt and feel the mushy mud. He isn’t fussy anymore. He’s in awe of all the beauty around him.

Where did my wonder for the world around me go? When was the last time I excitedly exclaimed over flowers or the leaves on the trees? Do I even notice the sounds around me when I sit outside? When did I lose my awe of the outdoors? Thankfully, I get to see it through my son’s eyes and be reminded of the beauty that is out there. Take a minute today, even if it is just to look out your window and wonder at the world as though through a child’s eyes.
